Careers in Code: Congratulations Cohort 6!
We’re very proud and excited to announce the graduation of the Cohort 6 students enrolled in our Careers in Code program!
Every one of these determined students continued to engage in class even when it transitioned from in-person to virtual, and went on to graduate from Careers in Code. We’re so proud of our sixth cohort of students and can’t wait to see them take the next step in their software development careers!
Our capstone presentations and graduation ceremony was held on Thursday, October 3 @ the James Commons Campus Center at LeMoyne College.
Immediately following the capstone project presentations was the graduation ceremony where each student received a diploma.
In the past, we had each student come up to the podium and present a little about themselves, their capstone, the process, demo and then have time for a few questions. This year our capstone presentations looked a little different: students presented their projects in a science fair style format.
You can view their capstone demo videos here and some photos here.

Project: Willows Haven
Demo
Childcare management web app, that is designed to help parents and teachers communicate easily, and keep track of important dates, information and more.

Project: SpellBinder
React, CSS, Node.js, Express, Sequelize, PostgreSQL, Beekeeper
Demo
The SpellBinder Wizard Spell Tracker app is built to help Dungeons & Dragons 5e players manage their wizard characters by tracking known spells, spell slots, and spell details. Users can create wizards, view a comprehensive list of spells, and toggle which spells are known or prepared. The app keeps each wizard’s data, including spell lists and levels, up-to-date, making it easier to manage characters over time. In future updates, I would like to add other character classes and a spell component tracking system.

Project: Stardew Valley Tracker
Demo
Desirae designed a tracker based on the video game, Stardew Valley. The tracker is a web app that helps you keep track of items you have collected and donated to the Community Center in the game.

Project: Early Intervention Case Management System — https://myprojectdomain.com/
React, Postgres, Sequelize, CORS, Fly.io, netlify, pdf-lib, clerk
Demo
I chose this project because I work in Early Intervention and I have seen first hand how difficult it can be to manage paper records. By using a Case Manager such as this it is not only easier to manage the child’s case but facilitating clerical tasks has become faster, and more reliable. I am particularly proud of the pdf-lib integration which allows a user to generate the required letters when a referral is made. I would like to add the ability to generate reports based on selected data, and I would like to add a calendar and task tracking system.

Project: Zenfem — tiffanyting.com
react, css, javascript, node.js, google map API, bootstrap, sequelize, fly.io, netlify
Demo
For my capstone, I created Zenfem, a platform designed to help women connect and support each other, especially in the post-COVID world where loneliness and community fragmentation have become common. I was motivated to tackle this issue because I believe real connections are more important than ever. A feature I’m proud of is the location-based profiles, which help users find and connect with people nearby. In the future, I’d love to add goal tracking and mentorship features to further support meaningful relationships.

Project: Ultimate Mortal Kombat Deception — https://ultimatemkd.org/
React, clerk, netlify, fly.io, react-dnd, sequelize
Demo
I chose to make an Ultimate Mortal Kombat Deception website because I didn’t realize that someone made a mod for this game until 2023. I grew up playing this game with my brothers and loved every minute of it. I haven’t seen anyone make a fansite of UMKD (Ultimate Mortal Kombat Deception). The site is mainly for newer people who want to play this game, discuss certain characters and want to make a tier list of characters from the mod to screenshot to show to their friends. One of the main problems was getting the comments to show up on the page. It took me a week to figure out how to remove the force:true from db.sync. In the future I want to add a dropdown that auto places characters in their tier depending on the version of the game you’re playing. I also would like to add a music player so users can listen to the game soundtracks. One thing I was proud of was when I got the tier list images to be in the boxes because I never would’ve thought that I could make something like this. I would also like to fix a few bugs on the tier list page, as it’s not completely finished in my eyes.

Project: Bustani
HTML, CSS, JS, REACT, Sequelize
Demo
The Problem? Too many house plants and inefficient methods to track and record the maintenance for each house plant.
The overall use? To provide house plant owners a convenient and simple way to keep track of their plants and the care they provide to them.
With over 10 houseplants I frequently lost track of which plants I watered, fertilized, or repotted including when I completed each care action. Because of this, I created Bustani, which means Garden in Swahili. Bustani can help plant owners like me mitigate some of the hassle and prevent plant death caused by mismanaged care.
The two main components of Bustani are the Inventory and the Maintenance logs. Users can complete the New Plant form to add a new house plant to their inventory. The inventory stores information like the name of the plant, its scientific name, the type of light and water it prefers and its location ion the house. Users can keep track of their plant care using the maintenance log form. The form lets users check which plants they watered, fertilized, or repotted and input the date the care took place. In the future I plan to add a reminder component that will use the last inputted date and send the user a notification based on the interval of care the plant needs. I also plan to incorporate a Chat GPT API users can interact with to learn more house plant care tips.
Careers in Code is a coding bootcamp that teaches computer programming to women and people from marginalized backgrounds to help combat poverty in Central NY. We provide students with the technical skills they need to obtain internships and entry level software development jobs with local employers after 24 weeks of instruction.
